Fairy Bower, on the way

On Marine Parade, on the way from Manly, Fairy Bower is a 20 m triangular rock pool built by locals in 1929. The bronze sea nymphs on its edge, Helen Leete’s Oceanides, went back up in 2017 after the 2016 storms.

Is Shelly Beach safe?

Is Shelly Beach patrolled? No. There are no council lifeguards and no surf club patrol at Shelly. The nearest flags are at South Steyne, the south end of Manly Beach, patrolled all year.6,7,8

Is it safe to swim? It’s usually calm: it faces west, away from the swell, and a reef shelters it. That doesn’t make it patrolled. Snorkel with someone, and leave the nearby surf breaks (the Bower, Winki and Deadman’s) to surfers.5,7
