Where to stay at Coogee Beach
A small, sheltered bay at the bottom of a hill. Sleep on the flat strip by the sand and Coogee is one of the easiest beach bases in Sydney. Book “Coogee” up the hill and it isn’t.
Stay on the flat beachfront strip between Dolphin Street and the InterContinental and you are one to five minutes from the sand. When we checked, hostel beds there were under $100 a night and beachfront hotels $127–$303. Hotels sold as “Coogee” up in Randwick are a 19–29 minute walk, with a 70–80 m climb home.
At a glance
- 8 km south-east of the CBD
- bus 373 · no train
- patrolled all year
- shark nets 1 Sep – 31 Mar
Coogee sits in a bowl. The flat bit is small.
The beach, the pubs and the bus stops sit at the bottom of a hill. Everything a few streets back is uphill, and a lot of “Coogee” accommodation is actually over the ridge in Randwick.
Those Randwick hotels were mostly cheaper than the beachfront hotels when we checked. They just aren’t at the beach: the walking routes put them 1.5–2.3 km from the sand, and the walk home climbs 70–80 m. That’s fine for a week of buses. It’s not what “Coogee Beach” in a listing title suggests.
75 m the climb home from the Randwick hotels most sites sell as “Coogee”.

How we measure. Times are walking times, not driving: the walking route from each property to the nearest edge of the sand, at an easy 4.8 km/h. Climb is the uphill on the walk home, rounded to 5 m. Prices are bands from one nightly rate on Google Maps on 9 October 2026.
Which end of the beach?

North end
Quieter. Stairs from Dolphin Point lead down to Giles Baths, an old rock pool, and the coastal walk heads north from here to Gordons Bay (good snorkelling) and Clovelly. Coogee Beach House and Coogee Sands are at this end.

Middle
Where Coogee Bay Road meets the beach: the Coogee Bay Hotel, cafés, takeaway and the bus stops on Arden Street. Most of the cheap beds are within a few minutes of here. Busiest and loudest end, especially on summer weekends.

South end
The Ross Jones Memorial Pool sits just below the surf club. Keep walking south on the coastal path for the women’s baths and Wylie’s Baths. The InterContinental and Dive Hotel face the beach here. Wedding Cake Island is the reef about 800 m off the southern headland.

Bondi is 6 km north on the coastal walk: two to three hours, past Clovelly, Bronte and Tamarama.

How do you get to Coogee?
From the city. There’s no train. Bus 373 runs between Coogee and the city (Museum), and the 374 and the X73/X74 expresses also serve Coogee. Plan the trip on the Transport NSW trip planner: times vary a lot with traffic.1,2,3
By light rail. The L2 light rail ends in Randwick, up on the ridge. From there it’s about 1.5 km down to the sand, and the same 75 m climb back up.2
From the airport. About 12 km by road from Terminal 1. There’s no direct train or bus, so most people take a taxi or rideshare.
From Bondi. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is 6 km one way, two to three hours, past Tamarama, Bronte and Clovelly. Coogee is the southern end.4
Is Coogee Beach safe?
Is Coogee Beach patrolled? Yes, all year. Randwick Council lifeguards patrol year-round and volunteer surf life savers from Coogee SLSC patrol on weekends. Swim between the red and yellow flags.5,6
Does Coogee have shark nets? Yes, from 1 September to 31 March. Nets reduce the risk; they don’t make an enclosure. On 13 June 2026, outside the net season, a swimmer about 30 m offshore was seriously injured by a great white shark. All eastern suburbs beaches closed and reopened on 15 June.7,8,9,10
Water quality after rain Stormwater runs into the bay after heavy rain. Check Beachwatch for the daily pollution forecast before you swim.11
With kids
Patrolled all year, so there are lifeguards even in winter. Ross Jones Memorial Pool, below the surf club at the south end, is the calmer option when the surf is up. The beachfront strip is flat; anything further back means pushing a pram uphill.
The catch
- The hill. Off the beachfront strip, every walk home climbs. Check the climb figure on each stay below.
- No train. Buses only, and the light rail stops up in Randwick.
- Summer weekends are packed, and Christmas Day is a famous backpacker gathering: in 2025 it left about 20 tonnes of rubbish behind (The Guardian).
- The Coogee Bay Hotel is a big pub with several bars. If you’re a light sleeper anywhere near it, ask which rooms face away from them.
