About Sydney Beachside

“Beachside” in a listing usually isn’t. I measure it.

I’m a Sydney local, and Sydney Beachside is my guide to where to stay on the city’s beaches, one beach at a time. It covers 27 beaches and 83 places to stay, and every walk to the sand on it is measured, door to beach. It isn’t a booking site, and nobody pays to be on it.

Why I built it

“Beachside” is the most stretched word in accommodation. Book a room from the other side of the world and you find out what it meant when you land: a 20-minute walk, a hill that wasn’t in the photos, sometimes a bus.

Booking sites can’t tell you, because nobody there has walked it. They list whoever is on their books, described however the owner likes.

So I started with the beach instead of the bed. Pick the beach that suits your trip, then see every real place to stay near it, closest to the sand first, with the walk and the climb home measured, and the beach’s downsides said plainly.

How I measure

The walk
The walking route on OpenStreetMap from each front door to the nearest edge of the sand, timed at an easy 4.8 km/h. Walking, never driving. I’m walking the routes myself too, beach by beach; Coogee’s are done.
The climb home
The uphill on the walk back from the beach, rounded to 5 m. It’s the number listings leave out.
Prices
A band (under $100, $100–200, $200–350, $350+) from one nightly rate on Google Maps on the day I checked. One date’s rate isn’t a promise, so I don’t print it as one.
Which places
Real businesses: hostels, hotels, apartment businesses, guesthouses. Private homes aren’t listed, because I can’t check them.
Beach facts
Lifeguards, shark nets, transport and water quality come from councils, Surf Life Saving, Transport NSW and the NSW Government, linked as numbered sources on each page, with the date I last checked them.

What you won’t find here

  • Paid placements. Nobody pays to be listed or to move up a list; the order is by walk to the sand, closest first.
  • Made-up reviews, star ratings or inspections, or “I stayed here” when I didn’t.
  • Stock or AI photos passed off as a property. Beach photos are by the photographers on the credits page; a place to stay only gets photos its owner supplies.
  • Hidden downsides. Every beach page has a section called “The catch”.

Right now no link on the site earns me anything: place names open Google Maps. If that ever changes, the paid link will say so where it appears.

Got something wrong?

Tell me. If a walk is off, a place has closed, or you run a place and the details are wrong, email enquiries@sydneybeachside.com.au or use the contact page. I fix it and update the checked date on the page.

Where to start

17 of the 27 beaches have places to stay of their own; the rest point you to the nearest bed and the walk.

Ask a local

Ask me anything about the beaches

Which beach, which end, which bed. Tell me your dates, budget and who’s coming, and I’ll reply, usually within a day.

Or email enquiries@sydneybeachside.com.au. No newsletter, no list.
