Turquoise surf rolling into Freshwater Beach on a sunny day, the headland and houses behind

Where to stay at Freshwater Beach

A sheltered surf beach between two headlands, one bay north of Manly. It has a pub, a surf club and a rock pool, but no hotels: the closest beds are over the hill in Manly.

Freshwater has no hotels or hostels of its own. The closest beds are at the north end of Manly, over the Queenscliff headland: an 11–17 minute walk to Freshwater’s sand, with a 10–20 m climb on the way home. When we checked, Manly Waves Hotel was $137 a night and Manly Beach Guesthouse $113. Both are a few minutes from Manly’s own beach.

A beach with no beds. Manly is over the hill.

Freshwater is a small residential suburb, and the beach sits in a bay between the Queenscliff headland to the south and the Curl Curl headland to the north. It’s on the Manly to Curl Curl walk.

When we checked, no hotel, hostel or guesthouse was operating in Freshwater itself. The Harbord Hotel on the beach is a pub, and the rest are single holiday houses. The nearest accommodation businesses are in Queenscliff and North Steyne, at the north end of Manly. They came up in the same searches. The walking routes put them 0.9–1.4 km from Freshwater’s sand, up and over the headland.

Know before you go

How do you get to Freshwater?

From the city. Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly. From the wharf it’s about 2.5 km to Freshwater, across Manly to Queenscliff and over the headland, or take a bus. Plan the trip on the Transport NSW trip planner.1

From Manly. Walk north along the beach to Queenscliff and take the path over the headland. Freshwater is on the Manly to Curl Curl walk.2

From the airport. About 30 km by road. By public transport it’s the train to the city and the ferry to Manly. Most people with luggage take a taxi or rideshare.

Is Freshwater Beach safe?

Is Freshwater Beach patrolled? Yes, in the season. Northern Beaches Council lifeguards patrol Freshwater for 40 weeks of the year, from the beginning of September to the end of May, longer than most Northern Beaches beaches. Swim between the red and yellow flags. In winter, Manly’s South Steyne is patrolled all year.3

Water quality after rain Stormwater runs onto the beach after heavy rain. Check Beachwatch for the daily pollution forecast before you swim.4

With kids

The bay is sheltered by its two headlands, and the ocean pool on the rocks is there when the surf is up. Patrolled September to May, so check the season before a winter swim. The walk from the Manly stays climbs over the headland; with a pram, the road is easier than the path.

The catch

  1. Nowhere to stay in Freshwater itself. Every bed on this page is in Manly, over the headland.
  2. No flags in winter. Patrols end in late May; South Steyne in Manly is the closest beach patrolled all year.
  3. Getting here from the city means the ferry and then a walk or a bus.
