Where to stay at Bondi Beach

A kilometre of sand with a flat strip of hotels, hostels and apartments along the front. Stay on that strip and the beach is a few minutes away. Book “Bondi” at the Junction and it’s half an hour on foot, uphill on the way home.

Stay on or just behind Campbell Parade and you are three to eleven minutes from the sand. When we checked, hostel beds there were $92–$114 a night and beachfront hotels $146–$352. Hotels sold as “Bondi” at Bondi Junction are a 31–36 minute walk, with a 90–105 m climb home.

There’s Bondi Beach, and there’s Bondi.

Bondi Beach sits low, with Campbell Parade running along the back of the sand. Everything inland climbs: up Bondi Road and Old South Head Road to the ridge at Bondi Junction, where the trains and the shopping centre are.

A lot of “Bondi” hotels are at the Junction. They were mostly cheaper than the beachfront when we checked, and the train is right there. They just aren’t at the beach: the walking routes put them 2.4–2.9 km from the sand, and the walk home climbs 90–105 m. The guesthouses and apartments halfway up Bondi Road are 18–22 minutes out, with most of that climb.

95 m the climb home from the Bondi Junction hotels most sites sell as “Bondi”.

Which end of the beach?

Ben Buckler headland at the north end of Bondi Beach, seen from above

North end

The gentler end for swimming, sheltered by the Ben Buckler headland, with the North Bondi surf club on the sand. Hotel Bondi, QT Bondi and the Swiss-Grand face the beach along this stretch of Campbell Parade; Beach Road Hotel is ten minutes up Beach Road.

Middle

Bondi Pavilion, the 1920s beachfront hall that is now a community and arts centre, faces the middle of the beach. The cafés, takeaway and bus stops of Campbell Parade are across the road. Wake Up!, Hotel Ravesis and Bondi Beach Backpackers are a few minutes from here.

South end

Bondi Icebergs’ ocean pool sits on the rocks below the clubhouse, and the coastal walk to Tamarama, Bronte and Coogee starts here. So does the Backpackers’ Rip, the strong rip against the southern headland. Bondi 38, Little Drifter and Bondi Beach House are a few minutes back from this end.

Know before you go

How do you get to Bondi?

From the city. Bus 333 runs from the city to Campbell Parade along Oxford Street and Bondi Road. Or take the T4 train to Bondi Junction and change to a bus for the last stretch down the hill. Plan the trip on the Transport NSW trip planner: road times vary a lot with traffic.1,2

From Bondi Junction station. About 3 km on foot to the sand: downhill on the way there, a climb of around 100 m on the way back. Most people take the bus.

From the airport. About 19 km by road. There’s no direct bus; by public transport it’s the train to Bondi Junction (via the city) and then a bus. Most people with luggage take a taxi or rideshare.

From Coogee. The Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is 6 km one way, two to three hours, past Clovelly, Bronte and Tamarama. Bondi is the northern end.3

Is Bondi Beach safe?

Is Bondi Beach patrolled? Yes, all year. Waverley Council lifeguards patrol every day of the year, with longer hours in summer, and volunteers from the Bondi and North Bondi surf clubs patrol too. Swim between the red and yellow flags.4,5

Which end is safer? The north end. The south end has a permanent, strong rip against the headland, known as the Backpackers’ Rip or Backpackers Express, close to the south-end bus stops. It catches a lot of visitors. Walk north and swim between the flags.6,5,7

Does Bondi have shark nets? Yes, from 1 September to 31 March. The net doesn’t cover the whole beach and isn’t an enclosure; it reduces the risk. Shark-spotting drones also fly over Sydney’s ocean beaches.8,9,5

Water quality after rain Stormwater runs onto the beach after heavy rain. Check Beachwatch for the daily pollution forecast before you swim.10

With kids

Patrolled all year, so there are lifeguards even in winter. Swim at the north end: the surf is gentler and you’re away from the Backpackers’ Rip. The promenade behind the sand is flat and runs the length of the beach; anything inland means pushing a pram uphill.

The catch

  1. The crowds. It’s Sydney’s most famous beach, and summer weekends are packed from early morning.
  2. The south-end rip. It runs near the south-end bus stops, so it’s the first stretch of sand many visitors reach, and the one to avoid swimming in.
  3. The hill. Off the beachfront strip, every walk home climbs. Check the climb figure on each stay below.
  4. Beachfront prices. The Campbell Parade hotels were among the dearest we checked on any beach.
