Where to stay at Whale Beach

A small, steep-sided surf beach between Avalon and Palm Beach, with houses stacked up the hills around it. Three places to stay, all up those hills.

All three places to stay at Whale Beach are up the hill. Crane Lodge is the closest: an 8-minute walk to the sand, with a 75 m climb home. Jonah’s, on the ridge towards Palm Beach, is 15 minutes with a 115 m climb, and Whale Beach Guest House is 18 minutes with 65 m. We didn’t see nightly prices for any of them on Google Maps.

A small beach at the bottom of steep hills.

Whale Beach is one of the most northerly of Sydney’s beaches, a short stretch of sand between Careel Head and the headland towards Palm Beach. The suburb is tiny, about 300 people, and its houses climb the slopes around the beach.

When we checked, there were three accommodation businesses: Crane Lodge and Whale Beach Guest House on the southern slopes, and Jonah’s on the ridge to the north. Every walk to the sand is downhill, and every walk home climbs.
