Gunnamatta Bay’s netted tidal baths at Cronulla are the calmest swim in Sydney for a toddler: no waves at all. South Curl Curl’s rock pool has a toddlers’ area, and Clovelly is calm behind its breakwater with lifeguards all year. Several calm spots have no lifeguards, so stay in the water with them.

How we ranked: Ranked on how calm the water is, then lifeguards and facilities. Calm isn’t safe on its own: stay within arm’s reach.
