Coogee is the best Sydney beach on a budget: when we checked, hostel beds two to five minutes from the sand were $65–$83 a night. Manly was close behind at $73–$100, then Bondi at $92–$114. Cronulla has no hostel, but its cheapest rooms were about $80, a 9-minute walk away.

Three hostels a 2–5 minute walk from the sand, $65–$83 a night when we checked.

The catch: The Coogee Bay Hotel is a big pub; light sleepers, ask about rooms.

## 4. Cronulla Beach

No hostel, but the Cronulla Motor Inn and Guesthouse 83 were $79–$81 a night, a 9-minute walk from the sand.

A hostel six minutes from the sand, the only budget bed on the far northern beaches.
