# Where to stay at Cronulla Beach, Sydney

URL: https://sydneybeachside.com.au/beaches/cronulla/ · Region: Sutherland Shire · Facts checked: 2026-10-09

One of the few Sydney surf beaches you can reach by train: the station is a few minutes from the sand. Plenty of beach, not many places to stay: a handful of hotels and apartments, and no hostel.

Stay at North Cronulla, at Quest Cronulla Beach or Rydges, and you are two minutes from the sand; both were $163–$174 a night when we checked. The cheapest rooms, at the Cronulla Motor Inn and Guesthouse 83 ($79–$81), are a 9-minute walk. There’s no hostel, and Quest Woolooware Bay, sold under Cronulla, is a 32-minute walk.

At a glance: 26 km south of the CBD · train to Cronulla station · flags all year at Cronulla Beach · ferry to Bundeena.

## Lots of beach. Not many beds.

Cronulla is the start of Bate Bay, a run of surf beaches that heads north past Elouera and Wanda towards Kurnell. The town sits at the southern end, on a low point between the ocean and Gunnamatta Bay, and the train station is a few minutes’ walk from the sand.

When we checked, that meant two hotels facing the beach, a motel and a guesthouse a few streets back, one B&B along the Esplanade and an apartment hotel at Woolooware, 2.6 km from the sand. The town’s backpackers is listed as permanently closed. For more choice, Bundeena, across Port Hacking by ferry, has B&Bs and holiday homes.

## Which end of the beach

- **North Cronulla.** The bigger, busier stretch, with its own surf club, a grassy park behind the sand and rock pools at the southern end. Rydges and Quest Cronulla Beach face this end, a couple of minutes from the sand.
- **South Cronulla.** A smaller beach below the town centre, with the South Cronulla surf club and the shops and cafés of Cronulla Street a block back. The train station is the closest to this end.
- **The Esplanade.** A paved path that runs from the beaches around Cronulla Point to Shelly Beach and its ocean pool, past rock platforms. Cronulla Seabreeze B&B is out this way, south along the Esplanade.

## How to get to Cronulla

- **From the city.** Take the T4 line to Cronulla, the end of the line. The station is about 270 m from the sand at South Cronulla. Plan the trip on the Transport NSW trip planner. (Sources: [Wikipedia: Cronulla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronulla,_New_South_Wales); [Transport NSW trip planner](https://transportnsw.info/trip))
- **From the airport.** About 20 km by road. By train it’s the airport line to Wolli Creek or the city and then the T4 to Cronulla. Most people with luggage take a taxi or rideshare.
- **To Bundeena.** A ferry runs from Cronulla across Port Hacking to Bundeena, on the edge of Royal National Park. (Sources: [Wikipedia: Cronulla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronulla,_New_South_Wales))

## Is Cronulla Beach safe?

- **Is Cronulla Beach patrolled?** Yes. Sutherland Shire Council lifeguards patrol Cronulla, North Cronulla, Elouera and Wanda in summer, and have kept patrolling Cronulla Beach daily through winter, with shorter weekday patrols at North Cronulla. Volunteers from the surf clubs patrol in the season. Swim between the red and yellow flags. - **Shark nets** Six Sutherland Shire beaches are netted from 1 September to 31 March. Nets reduce the risk; they don’t make an enclosure. Shark-spotting drones also fly over Sydney’s ocean beaches. - **Water quality after rain** Stormwater runs onto the beaches after heavy rain. Check Beachwatch for the daily pollution forecast before you swim. (Sources: [NSW Beachwatch](https://www.beachwatch.nsw.gov.au/))

## Is Cronulla good for kids?

- There are rock pools between North and South Cronulla, and an ocean pool at Shelly Beach along the Esplanade.
- The train means no car and no parking hunt: the station is a few minutes from the sand.
- The town centre and both beaches are close together and flat.

## The downsides

- Few places to stay. There’s no hostel, and the choice is mostly two beachfront hotels, a motel and a guesthouse.
- It’s a long way from the rest of Sydney: 26 km from the CBD, and the train ride to the city is a long one.
- Summer weekends bring the crowds off the train.
